Keynote Presenter:

Ray East

Father Ray East is the son of the late Thomas and Gwendolyn East.  The grandson of Baptist missionaries to South Africa, he was born in Newark, New Jersey.  Raised in San Diego, he graduated from the University of San Diego with a degree in Business Administration.  His position with the National Association of Minority Contractors brought him to Washington, DC where he later experienced a call to the priesthood and was ordained in 1981 by Cardinal Hickey.

Father East has served in six Washington parishes before being named director of the Office of Black Catholics and Vicar for Evangelization.  He is a member of the boards of Jobs Partnership Greater Washington and Food and Friends.  He also serves on the board of St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, PA .   He has worked in the areas of Liturgy, Youth Ministry, Initiation and Evangelization.

1 Mission...Possible!
Ms. Kathy Brown
How are we educating and inspiring people to be builders of peace and voices of justice?A look at strategies for integrating justice into catechesis for adults and children, why it is essential, and how it shapes us as missionaries.

Kathy Brown, MATh, is the Director of Community Engagement at Catholic Relief Services in Baltimore.  In over 30 years of working in the Church, Kathy has served in a variety of positions:  Director of Institutes and team member for the North American Forum on the Catechumenate, a parish Pastoral Associate with responsibility for initiation ministries, diocesan director of liturgy, RCIA and evangelization, director of Diocese of Phoenix office of Peace and Justice.  Kathy has numerous publications and is an international speaker on catechesis, liturgy and justice.


2 Is there Life After Easter in the RICA?
Ms. Patricia Barbernitz
RCIA does not end at Easter; nor does it begin after Labor Day.  Let’s explore the four periods of RCIA, with special focus on the dynamics of Precatechumenate and Mystagogia.  Done well, these two periods are perhaps most important in retention of newly initiated Catholics.

Patricia Barbernitz has ministered in the areas of evangelization and initiation for over 25 years. She has served on parish, diocesan and national levels, and is the author of three books and several articles on these topics. Pat's experiences and stories make her message both practical and inspiring. She is currently Associate for Evangelization at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Columbia, Maryland.

3 "Do You Believe This?"

How do we move from hearing the words of Jesus to truly believing them? A closer look at how faith develops in believers of all ages.

4 Jesus has been Raised!  A First Century Perspective

What might this have meant to people in first century Palestine?  We will investigate the Jewish background of belief in the resurrection.  This will provide the context to interpret what it means when the early disciples proclaim that Jesus has been raised from the dead.

Fr. Jim Donohue is the Theology Department Chair and associate professor of Theology at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD.  He has a Ph.D. from C.U.A. in Systematic Theology and belongs to the Congregation of the Resurrection.

5 Teenagers! You love 'em... But how do you manage 'em?!
Ms. Michelle Smetanik
Effective management of youth begins with self confidence and creative instruction. Lessons should focus on the teenagers' personal self discovery as well as their comfort level and relationships with peers and adults. Know yourself... then lead your teenagers!!

Michelle Smetanick is a 6th grade science teacher at Baker Middle School in Damascus, Maryland  She has taught in Montgomery County Public Schools, at both middle and high school levels, for 13 years. She is a curriculum writer and trainer of teachers as well.  Michelle has been a youth minister for 10 years and is currently ministering at St. Peter's in Libertytown, Maryland.

6 Roll the Stone Away: Really Rising with Christ*This workshop is repeated in the afternoon session

We so often wonder what we are to expect of the Risen Lord, and what changes in our lives His presence ought to make.  Take this “mini-retreat” to reflect on the meaning of the Resurrection for your life or ministry.

7 The Great Fifty Days
Ms. Mary Poffenbarger        
Alleluia! Jesus is Risen! Let us not miss this opportunity to continue celebrating the Alleluia's of these days.  In this workshop we will look at activities designed to keep Easter alive in our catechetical sessions, households and parishes.

Mary Poffenbarger is a professional catechist in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  Her present ministry is as a pastoral services Liaison for the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston.   She holds a masters degree in Religious Education and a Certificate in Pastoral Communications.  Mary has taught at all levels, including courses in catechetics at Mount St. Mary's and has presented workshops in parishes in both states.  She is a member of NPCD and NCCL.

8 Proclaiming the Word Part I: Foundations
Ms. Renee Bhatia
A primary way we receive the life-giving Word of God is through the proclamation at Mass.  In this workshop we will explore the role of the lector, the spirituality of proclamation, and the practical skills needed to be an effective lector.

Renee Bhatia, MDiv. is a lector at Christ the Redeemer parish in Sterling, Virginia.  She has worked in the catechetical ministry on both parish and diocesan levels in the Archdioceses of Chicago and Atlanta.  She currently works as a freelance writer and speaker.  Renee lives in Virginia with her husband and three children.

9 Liturgy Update
Rev. Robert Jaskot, S.T.L., Archdiocese of Baltimore
An update on recent developments in liturgy, including the revision of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, and the issuance of the instruction, Redemptionis Sacramentum.  We will consider the background, the issues, and some of the changes called for by these documents.

10 Happy and Holy Households of Faith
Ms. Joanne Ryn
Today less than 32% of families are made up of father, mother and children.  We will focus on the challenges faced by “non-traditional” families in the Catholic Church,  and how we can support and enrich all types of households of faith.

Joanne Ryn is the RCL Sales Representative for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  Prior to joining the RCL family Joanne spent 32 years in Catholic education as a school and religious ed teacher, a parish DRE, and a Director of Parish Services.  She presently teaches Sacramental Theology in the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Church Ministry Program and has taught undergraduate theology in various Catholic colleges in  Philadelphia.  Joanne is a mother of 4 and a grandmother of 7.  She resides in Hainesport, NJ.

11 Where do we find the Risen Lord?

12 Catholics & Divorce: Myths and Ministries
Ms. Mary Ann Leard
Separation and divorce have touched almost every American Catholic family.  This workshop will examine myths about divorce and the Church as well as the ministries and outreaches that are associated with being “Single Again.”

Since 1998, Mary Ann Leard has served as President of the Catholic Single Again Council, an affiliate of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.  She is editor of the Single Again newsletter, Co-chair of the annual Single Again Ministries Conference in Columbia since 1999 and a member of the Advisory Board of Friends of Mercy.  Ms. Leard was the recipient of the distinguished James J. Young award in 2004 in recognition of service that affects pastoral care for the separated, divorced, widowed or remarried families.

13 Young People on the Internet

Many young people today have never known life without the internet.  It is their primary source for information, communication and entertainment.  This workshop explores the benefits and hazards of life on the worldwide web and offers parents an understanding of youth culture online.

Paul and Sherry Raspa serve as the Management Team for Disciples Now Ministries, a web-based ministry for Catholic teens in the United States.  Together, they bring over 20 years of youth ministry experience at the parish, diocesan, regional and national levels.

14 Called and Gifted for Teens
Ms. Mary Poffenbarger
Designed to bring youth to an awareness of their call to holiness and life in the Church, this workshop presents four experiences that you can use and adapt to your sessions with youth.  A variety of methods and learning techniques will be explored.  Materials include youth journals and prayer experiences.

15 To your Textbook...and Beyond!
Ms. Holly Looney
A good textbook can be a launch pad for terrific lessons, but it is not the only resource you have.  Let's move beyond your textbook, and explore ways to enliven your sessions with creativity and fun.  For catechists of grades 3 to 5.

Holly Looney has been involved in religious education for over 20 years as a DRE and a resource consultant and author for Silver Burdett Ginn and has done numerous workshops throughout the Baltimore Archdiocese on teacher training and creative resources for catechists. She currently acts as Director of Liturgy for St. Ignatius of Loyola, Ijamsville. Holly has an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry from Boston College.

18 Proclaiming the Word Part II: Practicum
Ms. Renee Bhatia
Once we know the foundations underlying the proclamation of the Word, we need to put it into practice.  In this workshop we will videotape participants proclaiming the Word and offer constructive feedback.  We will learn from both doing and observing.  Come prepared to proclaim either Exodus 19: 2-6a or 1 Cor 10:16-17.
