Traveler's Guide to the Ten Commandments
Kathy Hendricks
The Ten Commandments are much more than a set of rules
about what we can and cannot do. They provide direction as we make
our way through life, pointing the way to expand our love for God, for
others, and for ourselves. They enrich us with possibility, hope,
and guidance as we travel the byways of life.

The Changing Face of
Ministry:
Responding to the Signs of the Times
Ms. Kathy Hendricks
Are we busy preparing for the past?
As the world changes, parish ministry changes. Keeping up with the
needs, interests, and expectations of those we serve takes alertness,
dexterity, and openness. This workshop will examine five signs of a
changing world and how they affect the way in which we minister.
Come with an open mind and an adventurous spirit!
Audience:

The Color and Shape of Faith
(This workshop is repeated - see #13)
Brother Michael O'Neill McGrath, OSFS
Art and catechesis go hand in hand. Art is a
great way to teach children about prayer and the Catholic faith. This
session will dwell on art, symbol, and the visual richness of the Catholic
Church and imagination. It will take the traditional and give it a new
twist. Brother Mickey will share his own paintings and stories and will
include project ideas for artistic and non-artistic teachers alike.
Audience:
Catechists
Clock hours: Catechist: C Youth Ministry: C
Brother Mickey O’Neill
McGrath, an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales, creates art for churches and
groups nationwide as well as for many of today’s leading Catholic
publishers, including America Magazine, World Library Publications,
Liturgy Training Publications, Sheed and Ward, Crossroads, and Orbis. His
work has also been featured in USA Today and St. Anthony Messenger. The
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has commissioned Mickey for
the past several years to create posters for National Migration Week,
Catechetical Sunday, and the Bishops Home Mission Appeal. In addition to
creating artwork, Mickey works nationally as a speaker at retreats,
Catholic education conferences, workshops, and parish missions.

in vain," anyway? Did Jesus break the Sabbath? Can our view of
Sunday learn from the Jewish Sabbath?

Keep Holy the Sabbath ~ Care of the
Minister's Soul
Ms. Kathy Hendricks
Hildegard of Bingen
wrote that there was nothing sadder than a "drooping soul."
Ironically, it is often those in ministry who suffer most frequently from
this type of malady. In giving so much to others, they can become
parched and brittle. In this workshop, we will look at various ways
to keep the "greening" of our souls a priority. Doing so keeps us
authentic and deeply immersed in an awareness of the love and splendor of
God.
Audience: All

Leadership
Cautiously Seeking Sacraments: Ministering to
Not-Quite-Connected Catholics
Mrs. Lauri Przybysz
In
light of our call to be evangelizing parishes,
this workshop invites parish catechists -

sacramental prep, RCIA - to take a closer look at the stories of people "on the
margins" of the Church, entering their programs. Discussion of
cohabitation, irregular marriages, cultural diversity and more.
Audience: Leaders,
Marriage Preparation Teams
Clock hours: Catechist: B Youth Ministry: B
Lauri earned an MS in religious education from
Duquesne University in 1996. She served as pastoral associate for a
Pittsburgh parish for 3 years before moving to Baltimore. She is currently
coordinating Marriage Education programs for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Lauri has been married to John for 29 years, with 6 children, ages 29-15, and
two grandchildren. She and her husband are national board members of the
Christian Family Movement, a network of small faith communities.

Again looking at the Ten Commandments
from their original context, this session looks at the commandments that
govern our relations with others, the second five. What does "though shalt not kill" mean, anyway? Did Jesus redefine the commandments
about killing and adultery? Why is coveting a sin?

Families, Violence, and the Media,
PT. 2
Ms. Margie Meyers
The Culture of the American Popular Media
is influencing our society in fascinating ways. We have become sponges
that soak up amazing amounts of images, emotion, information and values
that are often in conflict with our Christian Message. This workshop will
focus on developing skills to help us be more critical thinkers - using
media to our advantage in the classroom or the home rather than simply
‘absorbing’ all the media has to offer. How can popular media serve as our
'scenic route,' adding much light and color to life, without becoming a
dangerous detour?
Audience: Parents, Catechists, Youth Ministers
Clock hours: Catechist: C Youth Ministry: C
Margie Meyers is Director of
Catholic Education Ministries of Western Maryland. A Professional
Catechist and Youth Minister, she brings her degree in Communication from
LaSalle University as well as an avid love for (good) movies and a healthy
appreciation for popular media to the workshop.
