Mrs. Brigitte Schmidt, Coordinator of Religious Education, St. James, Boonsboro
by Judy Williams

Mrs. Brigitte Schmidt is the newly appointed Coordinator of Religious Education for St. James Parish in Boonsboro, effective June 16, 2008.

In her position, Brigitte will oversee the parish’s youth-faith formation for grades K-8, with approximately 120 youth enrolled.  Other activities include the parish Vacation Bible School, Christmas pageant and annual All Saints Day parade in downtown Boonsboro.

Prior to this job, Brigitte was a catechist at St. James and also helped coordinate the parish Christmas pageant, Vacation Bible School and All Saints Day parade.

Brigitte has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Mount St. Mary’s University and a Masters of Science in Special Education/Human Service Management from Western Maryland College (recently renamed McDaniel College).

Brigitte has been a stay-at-home mom for the last nine years, taking care of the affairs of the home.  Prior to staying at home, Brigitte worked for Melwood as an Admissions / Quality Assurance Manager for vocational services providing support for individuals with developmental disabilities.  Before Melwood, Brigitte was a case manager / advocate for the ARC of Frederick County.

The Schmidts have been parishioners of St. James for the past four years and previously were members of St. Peters parish while residing in Olney, Maryland.  Prior to living in Olney, they lived in Waldorf, Maryland where they were members of St. Ignatius Church located in Port Tobacco, Maryland.  The Schmidts were married in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (the old Polish Church) located in Silver Spring, Maryland.

A Mary Kay consultant in her spare time, Brigitte enjoys reading and cooking.  She and her husband, Bruce, have three children, Olivia, 9; Henry, 7; and Maggie, 4.  The Schmidt family is currently hosting a 15 year exchange student in their home, Ye Lim, from South Korea.

Brigitte looks forward to joining a “spirited” team in serving the spiritual needs of the St. James parishioners.  It is a parish that is very much fed by the energy and spirit of the community.

Brigitte finds inspiration in the words of the Gospel of Luke,

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

Luke 1:46-47

Central Maryland extends a warm welcome to Brigitte in her ministry!
